The Kinetic Chain. It's how our bodies move in sync, staying upright, walking, moving forward, running, sprinting, shooting hoops, or swimming. But there's one link in the chain - one VERY IMPORTANT link - that connects everything we do.
Interesting to know: In swimming, depending on the stroke, arms might do more work than legs to provide forward motion while legs provide a counterbalance to rotation in the water. In basketball, arms provide vertical lift when running and jumping and counterbalance rotation from the legs.
What is "the Core":
The core is the group of muscles in the trunk, including the abdominal and back muscles.
What the Core does: The core muscles protect internal organs, stabilise the trunk for posture, and - most important for sports - transfer force between the legs and arms.
What athletes can do: In the gym, we often focus on arms and legs but train core less frequently. Athletes can learn to properly brace during lifting if that's part of your gym workout. This has been shown in research to increase abdominal strength and also protects your back. Athletes can also do core exercises specific to your sport.
Bonus: Core exercises can help reduce lower limb injury risk!
